ANNUAL REPORT ‘12
BUSINESS REVIEW
57
Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain were the main
markets.
Events that had a significant impact on the airport
included:
• The regulating authority, INAC, authorised civilian
traffic at Beja airport;
• Beja airport entered into a partnership with the
Alentejo Tourism Promotion Agency to target the
Dutch market;
• New offices for UTI Portugal were inaugurated to
boost air freight and exporting companies in the
Alentejo, in support of the agricultural and industrial
sectors of this region.
7.2.2_Freight traffic
The current economic crisis has resulted in lower inter-
nal demand for the airfreight business; shippers and
importers are more price conscious and are switching
to sea and land transport options, sacrificing speed.
As global growth is now based on emerging economies,
there has been a growing demand for bulk commodities
instead of high-value, low-volume consumer goods.
Maritime shipping has become the preferential mode
in this case.
Air freight traffic in 2012 fell by 4.2% in the cargo
business and 5.9% in the mail business at the ANA
Group airports.
