ANNUAL REPORT ‘12
BUSINESS REVIEW

7.2.1.1.3_Faro airport
Traffic at Faro grew by 1.0%, totalling 5.7 million
passengers. The segments of traditional carriers and
low-cost carriers both performed well to produce this
growth. There were declines in movements (-2.8%)
and available seats (-1.5%), and when coupled with the
rise in demand, the result was a higher load factor
(+2.2 p.p.).
There was growth in the main markets of Germany,
Ireland, the Netherlands and Portugal, but the largest
market of all, the United Kingdom with 54.6% of the
market share, lost 74.5 thousand passengers.
Approximately 46.3% of the traffic at Faro airport is
operated by Ryanair and easyJet but there was also
good performance by AerLingus, Transavia and Jet2.
The growing trend for low-cost carriers was confirmed
in 2012, as Ryanair increased its operation following
the inauguration of its base at this airport.
Faro opened 6 new regular routes in 2012 as shown in
the following table.
Following the weather-related damages sustained by
the airport on 24 October 2011, it is only natural that
2012 would be marked by recovery efforts that placed
many restraints on the operations and quality of service
provided at the airport, especially in the passenger
terminal. During the first quarter of 2012, work was
done to restore normal operating conditions, and by the
IATA summer 2012 season, the airport’s capacity had
been fully restored.
