ANNUAL REPORT ‘12
CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND COMPLIANCE

tions technologies has played a major role in business,
as there is a greater demand for interaction between
the sector of information systems and other business
areas. Processes must be more uniform and faster to
increase operating and administrative efficiency.
The Group continued its initiatives in this area in 2012.
Besides the already existing programmes of mainten-
ance and/or renewal of systems and infrastructures,
the focus was on actions that contributed to the
achieving of the strategic objectives of the Group.
In 2012, the main initiatives were:
• The implementation of GO, a new tool for multi-
airport management operators. Begun in October
2010, it was completed at Lisbon airport in April
2012. This system was tailor-made for the needs
of ANA, S.A. and replaced the various systems
found at the different airports, which are now
easier to manage;
• The implementation of the new radio communica-
tion system based on the digital trunking norm
(TETRA) at the aiports of Lisbon, Faro, Funchal and
Ponta Delgada. The system was upgraded at
Porto airport, where it had already been installed.
This system is designed to support operating and
emergency communications, and by standardising
them at all the different airports, ANA, S.A. will have
at its disposal a new set of functions, which will also
be available to companies who operate in the airport
environment. It also provides greater reliability in
the operation and availability of specific functions in
emergencies (if an emergency channel is activated,
all communications in progress are automatically
interrupted). In order to ensure that this system
would fully work in conjunction with the NAV
communication systems, a protocol was signed with
that entity and registered with INAC;
• With the objective of achieving a more streamlined
management of handling passengers and baggage
in order to reduce costs and improve service, work
continued on the process begun in 2011 for
standardising the support systems for processing
passengers and baggage at airports (CUPPS/CUSS/
BRS).
CUPPS (Common Use Passenger Processing) allows
airlines to share check-in and boarding infrastruc-
tures; in other words, it provides the airlines with
full information in real time, regardless of the loca-
tion of their workstations. The standardisation of
this system, which is different from that used in
most airports, gives a greater control over the
operation and a significant savings of scale, both in
investment and in costs.
CUSS (Common Use Self-Service) is a Self Check-
in counter that allows passengers to obtain a
boarding pass and/or baggage claim ticket, regard-
less of the company they are travelling with.
Passengers are more autonomous and more in
control of their trip; airline companies lower the
costs of their operations.
The BRS (Baggage Reconciliation System) links
the baggage to the passenger and is an important
instrument for security purposes (the baggage only
goes on the aircraft if the passenger boards) and
for operations (manual reconciliation takes more
time and manpower).
These systems have been in operation at Lisbon
airport since 1 October 2012 and the core compo-
nents of the systems are being implemented at
the other airports;
• With a view to modernising the image of the com-
pany and bringing it more in line with current trends,
the new concept of the internet site of ANA, S.A.
went online to the public on 31 July. Among the
various features provided by the site, passengers
can organise their entire trip, get directions or make
online purchases. It also integrates the ANA, S.A.
presence on the social networks and is accessible
on mobile devices. Along with the modernisation of
